Quick rule summary
  • Basic format: 10 characters total: one leading letter followed by nine digits; symbols are not allowed.
  • Issuing region letter: The first letter indicates the issuing city or county (A=Taipei City, B=Taichung City, etc.).
  • Second digit meaning: Citizen IDs use 1 for male and 2 for female; 8 and 9 mark ARC male and female residents.
  • Checksum rule: Convert the letter to two digits (A=10…Z=33), apply weights 1, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1 to each digit, sum them, and ensure the total modulo 10 equals zero.
