Quick rule summary
- Basic format: One uppercase letter followed by nine digits without spaces.
- Region letter: The first letter maps to a Taiwanese city or county, such as A for Taipei City, B for Taichung City.
- Second digit: Digit 1 denotes male citizens, 2 female citizens. Digits 8 and 9 are used on ARC resident certificates.
- Checksum rule: Convert the letter to two digits, multiply by weights (1,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,1), add them up, and the total must be divisible by 10.
