Three stages, kana rows, and three ways to pair
A round has three stages: a 4 by 4 board, a 6 by 5 board with two obstacles, and an 8 by 6 board with six obstacles. Pick which rows of the gojūon to practice (a-row through wa-row, plus dakuon, handakuon, and yōon), then choose how cards pair: the same kana, hiragana with its katakana, or a kana with its romaji reading. Each stage draws its kana from the rows you picked without repeating until the pool runs out.
Matching, feedback, and time
Two cards clear when they form a pair and can be joined through empty cells with at most two turns, including paths around the board's edge. A match scores 10 points, and matches within 2.5 seconds of each other build a combo of up to 3x. Choosing a wrong card shakes both cards, shows the readings, and marks the kana as one to review. In timed mode each stage gets 4 seconds per pair and leftover seconds become bonus points; practice mode has no timer. Voice playback uses the browser's Web Speech API and can be switched off.

How do I match and clear kana cards?
Select two cards that form a pair under the pairing mode you chose. They clear only when a path through empty cells connects them with no more than two turns; the path may also run around the outer border. If they are a pair but cannot be joined yet, clear other cards first.
Which kana can I practice in the game?
The full gojūon is included. Pick any rows from the a-row to the wa-row, plus dakuon, handakuon, and yōon. Pairing can be the same kana in hiragana or katakana, hiragana with its katakana, or a kana with its romaji reading.
Why can't I hear the kana pronunciation?
The game uses the browser's Web Speech API to read a card when you select it. Playback depends on browser support, an available Japanese voice, the voice toggle, and a user interaction; matching still works without sound. Sound effects are a separate toggle and start off.
What happens when no matching path remains?
The game detects the deadlock and shows a Shuffle button. It keeps the remaining cards and obstacles, moves the cards to new cells, and guarantees at least one available pair so you can continue.
Does the game save my score or progress?
No. Score, combo, and the recap of practiced and missed kana exist only for the current round. Only the voice and sound-effect toggles are remembered on this device. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
